Hearts- (Show the bag)
When you see hearts do you think of sweethearts? Romance? Love? Today I want to share with you one of the sweetest love stories I have ever read, except this story starts off very sad. We’ve got this story in the bag. We’ll begin this true love story on the road to Bethlehem. Can you see the three women? One is an older woman; the other two are young women.

It’s obvious that all three women are blue, excuse me, that’s just another way to say they were really, really sad. The two young women were Moabites. No I didn’t say, “more bites”, I said Moabites. That means they were from Moab. And the older one, Naomi, was Hebrew. She was going home to Bethlehem, which means house of bread. There had been a famine in the land so they went to Moab to find bread. Now the famine was over and there was bread. Her husband and both her sons were dead, so Naomi was going home. This is not your typical Mother-in-law story; her daughter-in-laws loved her and they wanted to go with her.
They hadn’t traveled far when Naomi stopped and turned to face them. “Girls, go home to your families where you belong. God bless you for your faithfulness. God bless you with another wonderful marriage.” All three of them stood in the middle of the road crying. “NO, we want to go with you,” both girls agreed. I’m an old woman”, Naomi said, “Girls, find yourself a nice husband and get married again. That won’t happen hanging around an old woman like me.”
They all burst into tears and cried again for a while. Orpah kissed her dear mother-in-law, dropped her arms from around Naomi’s neck and slowly and reluctantly turned to go home. Then Naomi turned to Ruth, “Sweetheart, your sister-in-law is going home and you should too!”

“Please, don’t make me go back,” Ruth begged. “Where you go I will go. Your people will be my people. Your God will be my God.” We have a term to describe a good-hearted person like Ruth- a “heart of gold” A heart of gold describes the attitude of kindness and goodness. Ruth had a heart of Gold. She was willing to give up her home, her family, everything she had and everything she had known to go with her mother-in-law Naomi. She was willing to give up the good life because she loved Naomi. Naomi understood the depth of her sacrifice as they both continued toward Bethlehem.

Let’s look deeper at Ruth’s heart. When a soldier is wounded on the battlefield our nation gives them a medal of honor called The Purple Heart. If the Purple Heart is a sign of being wounded, then Ruth had a purple heart.
