David Bible
Story
There
are so many reasons we love the Bible stories from the life of David. His rags
to riches story is inspiring. His integrity, his persistence, his love for God
make David a role model children can follow.
David Bible Story
Trick Bag
King of Rock & Roll
David King
of Rock and Roll Bible Story Trick Bag goes from the boy worshipping in the pastures to
his deep faith in the rock of ages to show that David understood how to roll
his cares on the Lord. This bag is an overview of the life of David and his
heart for God. Click here for more information on the
Bible Story Trick Bag
(Show the outside of the
bag with the music notes.) I want to use this bag to tell you a story about
David, the king of rock and roll. I know what you are thinking; No way!
Elvis is the king of rock and roll. But I have to disagree. Like Elvis,
David loved music. He had a stringed instrument, different than the guitar,
but still a stringed instrument and flutes and tambourines. But it was the
source of David’s music that he loved the most- God. His music was a way to
worship and express his love to God. He was a shepherd. He filled the long
hours watching the sheep with music. He got quite a reputation for his
music. When King Saul’s mind was tormented, they brought David to play his
soothing music.
His lyrics were not
nonsensical, jabbering about Ole Mac Donald or Mary Had a Little Lamb. They were
from his heart. Many of the Psalms, the songbook of the Bible, were written by
David and his worship band. Some were written in times of pain and sorrow. They
were a cry to God for help. Others were an expression of his heartfelt worship.
So David was a singer, but what about the title “King of Rock and Roll”?
(Sheep) The dry, rocky
terrain was perfect for sheep. As David spent long hours caring for his sheep,
his mind and heart was busy praying, thinking about God. He saw illustrations in
nature that helped him understand God better. He said, in Psalms 18:2 “the Lord
is my rock and my fortress”. How well David knew what it was like to scurry
under the protection of a rock during a violent rainstorm. He understood the
protection a mountainous cave could provide when hiding from an enemy. In his
worship he declared, “God you are my rock.” David rehearsed who God was to him
personally in his worship. Speaking of rocks, don’t forget it was a rock that
was used to bring the giant to the ground. He understood it was God, his rock
that defeated his enemies.
That explains the
rock part, but why do I call him the king of rock and “roll”? David learned to
roll all his cares into God’s hands. He was a wise man. He was a good man. He
was a skillful warrior. But when you have an angry king, a huge army and every
town in the nation just waiting to turn you in for a king’s ransom, you learn
very quickly that it takes someone more powerful than a mortal man to take care
of you. David recognized God as the source of his help. He said, “You are my
strength and my song,” He learned to roll his problems into God’s hands. There
are many promises in the Holy Scriptures that promise God will be with you to
take care of your every need. Roll your problems on the Lord
