It’s About Love!

Looking for some really cool ideas for February? These ideas will warm your heart and help you to teach eternal truths.

Spread love

Love is not for storing.  Love is for spreading. There are all kinds of places and people that need the love your kids have. Talk to your kids about spreading love. Use the skit that follows to start the conversation. Then talk about some people groups and some ways to spread love to them. One of my favorite people groups are the  Senior Citizens. (I know what you folks are thinking. No, it’s not because I’m so close to being a senior myself!)

Encourage your children to reach out to a senior citizen at Valentine. Even something as simple as a homemade card can be given to an older person in the church, neighborhood or family member. Brain storm as a group, children have great ideas. Some may be diabetics so avoid sugary sweets

I have listed three very important points to remember around senior citizens, all the time, not just Valentine.

  1. Be Polite. It is always the right thing to be courteous and polite to older people.
  2. Be considerate. Children should be especially careful when older people are in the hallway. Children running in the hallway could cause a nasty fall for a senior citizen with fragile bones. So be very careful in church foyers and hallways. Seniors are one more important reason not to run in the church.
  3. Smile and speak to them. When you pass an older person, look then in the eyes and give them one of your happiest smiles. Smiles are contagious you know! Everyone needs to feel important and your interest can do that for a senior citizen.

Spread Love Drama/Puppet Skit

Hart: What’s wrong with you?

Reggie: Awe, I’m grounded. I hate being grounded, especially when it’s not my fault.

Hart: You’re grounded and it’s not your fault?

Reggie: It’s my teacher’s fault. She read dis dumb quote to us. My teacher says dat Mother Teresa said “Spread love everywhere ya go.” But I don’t believe it.

 Hart:  You don’t believe what?

Reggie:  I don’t believe a nice lady like Mother Teresa would say something like dat.

 Hart: Like what?

Reggie: You aren’t listening, “Spread love everywhere you go.”

Hart:  You got me confused. Mother Teresa did say that. But what’s wrong with spreading love?

Reggie: Cause dat’s what I did and my mom got so mad she grounded me for de rest of my life.

Hart: Your mama grounded you for spreading “love”?

Reggie: Dat’s right. Ya see I love peanut butter. So I took a jar with me and everywhere I went I spread some of dat love.

Hart: You spread peanut butter on the wall?

Reggie: And on de recliner, and de doorknobs. Ya shoulda seen her trying ta open da door with all dat peanut butter on it. I laughed til I cried, but mama didn’t laugh!

Hart: That’s not spreading love. That’s making a big mess.

Reggie:  But I love peanut butter and sardines and onions wid pickles and catsup. But I didn’t spread any of dat utter stuff.

Hart: Spreading love is giving kindness and consideration for others. It’s helping people. It’s smiling at them and saying nice things to them. And it’s an attitude of the heart. When God’s love is in your heart, it’s gonna come out in your actions.

Reggie:  Oh, no. I goofed again. I got a big mess to clean up. I better git busy. I wonder if mama will let me lick the peanut butter off the wall?

 Hart: Don’t even ask!

Talk about it: What are some ways to spread love? Who are some people that you can spread love to?

Parents Like Valentines too!

Hey! While we’re talking about folks to spread love to, let’s not forget our parents. Anytime is a good time to show them our love. Encourage every child to give their parents a Valentine this year that last all year long. That’s right!  Help your students give their parents a valentine that is better that the biggest box of chocolates and one that won’t make their mama fat either.

To make this presentation more effective use magnetic letters on the OHP or cut hearts like the conversation hearts in pastel colors and put a letter on each to spell out VALENTINE. It would be fun to put them in one of the candy conversation heart bags. Pass out a few hearts and let the students read them aloud them begin to pull out the hearts with the letters on them and begin the explanation below.

·        V: Value your parents. They are very special people. No one loves you like your parents.

·        A: Assist them. A family is like a team. Everyone needs to work together.

·        L: Listen to your parents. Obey them.

·        E: Encourage your parents. They like to hear kind words.

·        N: Notes. Write your parents little notes to tell them you love them.

·        T: Thank them. Being a parent is tons of work. Tell them you appreciate them and name specific things you appreciate that they do.

·        I: Intercede for them. Pray for them everyday.

·        N: Never, ever, ever backtalk. Make a decision and just don’t do it!

·        E: Enjoy your parents.

"We Love Families" Celebration

Churches talk a lot about families, but often it is only talk. Do something to build the family. Have a “We Love Families” celebration. Conduct a workshop on a topic of interest for families or rent a teaching video. Make it easy for people to attend by including child care and pizza.

Or you might want to make it a Family Night. Keep the cost low. Include snacks or order pizza. Ask every family to bring a soft drink and their favorite board game. Have one of the puppets give a short object lesson for the devotion. Play an ice breaker game with a couple ice breaker songs.

The Greatest Love- God gave His Son

February is a great time to teach on “The Greatest Love.” Use “His Love Will Go On!” a parody of the theme song from the Titanic on RPM5. Use the storybook (with visuals)" You are Special” or “You are Mine”. Either story is great for teaching on God’s unconditional love. Also show a cross and teach the illustration that the cross reaches down because God loved people enough to send His son into the world. And out to reach all the people of the world because God loved the world so much that He gave.

A Clean Heart

Since February is heart month why not talk about the importance of keeping their heart clean. One of the best ways to do that is to guard your heart.

We have adorable heart puppets . I hope you'll check them out!

The Greatest Commandment

When asked, “What is the greatest commandment?” Jesus explained, “to love the Lord with all your heart, and all your soul and all your strength.” That is a lot of love. Yet that’s how God wants us to love Him.

We put together an entire lesson on this subject in God’s Laws for Kids, a study of the Ten Commandments.  Why not kick off a study of the Ten Commandments with this powerful lesson from God’s Laws for Kids the Sunday before or after Valentines’ Day.

  Love That Lasts A Lifetime

Use two bird puppets for the skit below. It is taken from God’s Laws for Kids lesson on "Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Bertie:  I went to a wedding. They kissed in front of everybody.

Toucan:  Yeah, they do that at weddings.

Bertie: No kidding. The minister had them repeat a bunch of stuff after him

Toucan: Yeah, that was their vows.

Bertie: No, I know my vowels, A E I O and U. They were saying some stuff about I promise to love, cherish and obey until something or something like that.

Toucan: Not  vowels. Vow. A wedding vow is a very special promise that a couple makes to each.

Bertie: And they put a ring on each other’s finger.

Toucan: The rings have a special meaning too.

Bertie: I had a feeling you were going to say that.

Toucan:  No, this is really neat. Have you ever noticed a ring doesn’t have an ending. It keeps going around and around and around.

Bertie:  All right already. I’m getting dizzy and your point is…

Toucan: The ring is a promise that their commitment to each other will never end. They will always be true to the person they are marrying. This promise is meant to last a lifetime!

Bertie: You know that ring made me think of something else. Do you wanna get a donut. Now that’s something that I wish would never end. Can you imagine a never ending donut…wow! Taken from God’s Laws for Kids. Copyright Ó1997 All rights reserved.

Talk about it: God intended that a couple keep the vows they made to each other at their wedding for their entire lifetime. God planned that their love would go on and on just like the rings they exchange as a symbol of their vows. But in our society 50% of marriages end in divorce. Divorce is a very painful thing.

Our society has many problems that cause divorce to happen, but God has a better plan for your life. It will be several years before you marry or even start dating, but there is something you can do right now to help your marriage last a lifetime.

  1. Begin praying right now that God will help you find His choice for your life.
  2. Make a decision right now that you will never date anyone that is not a born again Christian.
  3. Realize the importance of keeping your promises. Become a person of your word. Do what you say you'll do, even when it is difficult.
  4. Practice kindness, it is a habit that will continue into your adult life.
  5. Begin to tithe and develop good stewardship habits.

Hey while we’re talking about Valentine, don’t forget your workers. It’s a perfect excuse to say I love you!

Say I love you to your workers:

.with a Valentine

.…with  a kiss. (chocolate of course.)

…with a book.

…with a balloon.

…with a gift certificate.

…with a hug and a kiss. (chocolate and chocolate with almond.

…with a book marker

…with a candle.

…with a cup.

…with a Valentine Party. Keep it simple. Borrow the decorations from the Youth Department or better yet have your party the same weekend and ask the youth to leave the decorations up.

Children that Pray

I am convinced it is vital that we teach children to pray. We buy school supplies so our children are ready for school. We make sure they have their coat when they play outside on a cold day. But what about preparing them to face life with the support that comes from knowing a loving God want to have relationship with them as an individual. That knowledge is vital to the success of today’s child. Prayer based on God’s Word and faith in Jesus Christ produces the strength a child needs to face the obstacles of everyday life. No child should start a day without it.

Prayer is one of the most powerful forces on the face of this earth. The simple faith of a child makes it much easier for them to tap into the heaven's resources. I have seen children receive amazing answers to prayer. I love to have little children pray for me.

I believe my prayer life as an adult is a direct result of the influence of a praying mother and a children’s program that included teaching and modeling prayer to children. I encourage you to involve children in times of prayer. Let them see you pray.  Let them hear you pray. Encourage them to pray. The faith of a child is amazing to behold. My granddaughter at the age of 20 months is already learning to pray. Sometimes we have to ask the blessing over the food again and again because she insists we "ay".

Prayer turns our focus from our ability and to God’s. Sometimes God will allow needs so we turn to Him. Charles Stanley communicates that fact beautifully in his Our Unmet Needs. "God creates needs so that we might trust Him to provide for the needs, and in the process, we might grow in our relationship with Him and strengthen our abilities to be and do what He has created us to be and do Stated another way, any lack in our lives is an opportunity for us to grow in our relationship with God, and an opportunity for us to grow in our abilities and in our faith so that we can be even more effective servants of God and witnesses to God's love and grace."

Prayer mixed with faith produces peace. Imagine the confidence that brings to a child that no matter what is going on, their heavenly Father has it all under control.

H.I.S. Army Curriculum

I’d like to tell you about our curriculum on prayer and the armor of  God. The disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray. So He gave them a pattern that many people call “The Lord’s Prayer.” H.I.S. Army uses the Lord’s Prayer to help children discover: Power of Prayer; Disciple of Prayer; Find God’s Will; Un-Forgiveness will hinder your prayer; Lead Us Not into Temptation; Praise Power.

We're convinced we can help you teach the children how to pray and how to put on the whole armor of God with a curriculum that is fun, meaty and easy to use. This curriculum goes beyond fun! It provides a spiritual depth that children are really hungry to discover. We've deliberately kept the cost low so anyone can afford this exciting program designed to go beyond entertaining to training.

Mojo is a Gomer Pyle type character that wants to be in God's army, but he doesn't have any muscles. After the teacher convinces Mojo you don't need muscles to be in God's army, you just need to have Jesus in your heart, he is ready to sign-up! Each week they'll discover another piece of the armor from a viewpoint that is unique to Mojo. He heard the army was suppose to be a ball, so he brought his own. He thinks the breast plate of righteousness is a dinner plate. He insists he will never wear a girdle, but a belt he's glad to put on. You'll involve several of the kids in your class in the elite God Squad. Teach them to march, echoing the army cadence designed for this unit. Mojo never quite learns how to march, so he's constantly bumping into the group or the wall or worse, the Drill Sergeant. Watch the fun and laughter grow as  Mojo is taught  powerful lessons.

You'll use true and amazing stories from Corrie Ten Boom's Hiding Place to illustrate these lessons.  The Bible stories are not an afterthought, they are used to emphasis the truths necessary for today's child to be an over comer in life. These principals are clearly portrayed by David, the shepherd king and lover of God.
