Spring
is here. (Although my friends in Alaska can see no visible signs, in the
South it has arrived in all its glory.) The arrival of the robins make it official. The air is warm and
sweet. The azaleas have been glorious! Every yard in my neighborhood has at
least one glorious bush covered with the brightest pink you can imagine. As
you drive down the lanes the crooked dogwoods look like white clouds and the
redbuds pepper the view. The new spring green color where the new leaves
have pushed off the old tired ones from the branches is the most beautiful
color of the year. A sense of awe and wonder grips me every year when I see
this special color that is never seen at any other time except spring.
Yellow blooms on still other trees are scattered among the dogwoods, and my
favorite new spring green. The azaleas are bright splashes of salmon, pink,
white and the richest fuchsia color I’ve ever seen. The azaleas sit like
lap dogs under the gnarly live oaks just beginning to come alive with new
leaves. The Japanese Yew are covered with purple blooms that look too big
for their small branches. The hyacinths, grape, and white and red are poking their heads from the
ground. The day lilies are covered in golden and orange blooms. The sweet
song of the birds serenade the busy arrival of Spring time! The squirrels
are busy gathering materials for their nest high in the trees, with only an
occasional break to chase one another or fuss at me for getting too close. But
you have the privilege of giving children a gift that keeps on giving and
giving and giving. When
you give children the Word of God, you give them something better than
giving a dozen red roses. The roses will fade, but the Word of God is
eternal. The Word of God does
for the soul, what flowers do for our emotions and then more. The
Word lifts us. It encourages us. It is sweet. It helps us know God. It
cleans us. Paul expressed it beautifully in his letter to Timothy in 1
Timothy 3:16, 17. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto
all good works.” There
is no hope like the Hope we have in Christ Jesus. There is no peace like the
Peace Jesus gives. When you are afraid, nothing is more powerful than going
to the scripture and reading aloud “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be
not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help
thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.”
Unless it might be another scripture. God’s Word is powerful! God’s
Word is eternal! I’ve heard of stories where that statement was uttered
and a heckler taking a Bible in their hands while blurting, “You want to
see how eternal the Bible is? Watch this,” as they proceed to tear the
Bible to shreds. The Bible can be torn up, but it is forever settled in
heaven. God isn’t going to change His mind tomorrow and say, ” No, I
think today I’m going to come up with some new instructions.” No, God
doesn’t change His mind. His words are ageless. They are stable in a
constantly changing world. That brings such peace to know God does not
change. He is love. He always will be. He always has been. God does not
change. His Word does not change. Yet, the Word of God is relevant. That’s
why your job as a teacher is so important. That’s why above all else, we
must give our students the gift that doesn’t change, the gift that
doesn’t fade—give them the Word
of God!
SAMPLE SKIT
FROM FLOWER POWER Posie: Oh, I hate
these pesky bees. Shoo! Shoo! Leave me alone.
Rosie: What are
you doing? Don't hurt those bees! Posie: What are
you talking about, hurt the bees? Don't you know those bees have huge
stingers and it really hurts to get stung. Rosie: I know they
have stingers, but when they drink nectar from one flower pollen gets on
their legs, when they go to another flower the pollen from the first flower
is deposited in the second flower. The farmer calls this pollination.
Without pollination the plants can't produce fruits and vegetables. Posie: You mean
the bees help the plants. Rosie: That's
exactly what I mean. Without pollination the apple trees won't have apples.
Without bees the squash plant won't produce squash. The bees are the
farmer's friend. He welcomes them into his garden and orchard. Posie: Even with
their stingers. Rosie: God
designed the whole plan. In God's divine plan He can take even bad things
and bless His children with them. Posie: Now come
on! Rosie: The Bible
says in Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for
good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his
purpose." Posie: Wait a
minute are you saying God can use bad things to bless His children? Rosie: The Bible
says "all" things. He means all things. Sometimes bad things
happen to Christians, but if a Christian will hold on the Word of God, God
will turn those bad things into good things.
S:FPC"> To
make a large flower come from a large pot you will need foam and cardboard.
Glue the foam to the cardboard with contact cement. Draw a flower on the
cardboard. Cut out the flower. Cut out the center of the flower where the
face will be. Spray the cardboard black. Spray paint the flower, including
the edges with any color you would like. Hot glue an elastic strap across
the back to hold the hood on the head. Sew a sack with opening on the side
and bottom for the arms and legs to go through. Put a draw-string in the top
of the sack. Make two leaves like you did the hood. Attach two elastic
straps to hold the each leaf on an arm. (To use under black light. Spray a
light coat of florescent paint over the base coat.) Make a flower pot out of
masonite or cardboard. Paint it brown or clay. The flower should wiggle out
the top of the top like a flower might burst from the ground and grow. Under the moss
draped live oaks in my yard I have planted flaming red impatiens. Toward the
end of the growing season I noticed seed pods forming. I watched until they
grew fat and long, then I decided to gather some for Spring planting. But
when I touched the seed pod, it burst shooting the seeds everywhere. I was
surprised, but touched the next pod. Then I noticed empty curled pods that
had burst when a drop of rain or
a gentle swaying of a leaf touched it. Maybe you know what I’m talking
about.
Then I understood why I had little impatiens growing all over that
part of the yard. When that seed pod would burst into a coil, the seeds
would be scattered over the yard and the tiny seeds would form new plants. Do you think maybe God would like for you and I to be more like those seed pods? I believe we need to be so full of God’s Word and love for souls that we are ripe and ready to share it with lost people. The Mission Field is not the church pew in most cases. If you want to catch fish, you don’t take your pole to the back row of the church. You go to the pond or the river. If you and I want to reach souls for Christ, we must go where they are. Where are the lost? Outside the walls of your church. We’ve got to take the gospel outside the stained glass windows. We’ve got to take it to our neighborhoods and our schools. We’ve got to take it where people are hurting and sick. It was amazing to
notice the tiny plants already blooming. The bloom was bigger than the
little stalk that held it. I’ve never seen anything so anxious to bloom.
Maybe that’s why they call them impatiens. They’re just so impatient to
bloom. When the children in our class love God, it is only a natural thing
for them to bloom. When we train them to share Jesus with their friends,
families and neighbors, when we equip them to be a witness, we will see many
of them bloom like those tiny impatiens. Those impatiens keep blooming and blooming until the cold
kills them in the dead of winter, then at the first sign of warmth they are
back, blooming again. My earnest prayer to God is, make me like the
impatiens. Let me bloom by being a soul winner. Let my life bring glory to
your name like the beauty and
fragrance of flowers. Don’t let me become so comfortable enjoying your
blessings that I forget there is a lost and dying world that needs Jesus!
Maybe you would like to pray that prayer with me?
A
GIANT OF A TEACHER She sat on the front row alone. When I asked everyone to
share with the group what they did in ministry, she was the first to speak.
Her voice was quiet, almost shy. I could hardly believe my ears. Her list
was long. Her dark brown eyes sparkled with excitement as she listed her
responsibilities. In motherly concern, I advised before thinking, “You be
careful that you don’t get over loaded with too many jobs.” If I have known a
hero was sitting on the front row I would have written down her name. She
didn’t look outstanding. She looked and sounded very ordinary, at first.
She was young, much too young to be wearing all the hats and carrying all
the responsibilities she shouldered even if her church was small. When she responded
to class questions the love for “her” children, the boys and girls in
her class, and excitement over
teaching bubbled in her voice.
I asked the class, “Share some
ways you teach children to pray?” Several
shared great ideas, but her
answered impacted me. “Oh, I let all my children pray aloud if they want
to. Sometimes several will ask to pray and I let each of them take a turn.
They are doing it at home too.” “One day I was
visiting the home of twin’s in my class. Their mother asked if I would
like to go out to eat supper with them. Then the mother cautioned this
Sunday School teacher, ‘Now don’t preach to my husband. If there’s one
thing he won’t stand for is anybody preaching to him.’ “ “When the food
was brought to the table. The twins bowed
their heads to pray. The adults bowed their heads. 'Thank you Jesus for
dying on the cross for my sins. Amen.’
“ “‘The girls
pray that prayer over every meal,’ the mother explained. That teacher
couldn’t share the gospel with the twin’s Daddy yet, but every time the
girls prayed over the food he was hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” I realized as I
heard her speak, I was listening to a giant in God’s sight. She may never
speak at a conference. She may never pastor a church, but she is a giant in
my eyes. Why was I so impressed? 1.
She loved “her” girls. Not that she was their guardian, but that
they were her responsibility to train and nurture with the Word of God. 2.
She realized her responsibility didn’t stop after the lesson was
done on Sunday morning. 3.
She cared enough to
visit their homes. 4.
She taught them to pray
and to love Jesus. Empty Flower Pot “Oh, look how pretty!” “My yes. It is one of the most
beautiful I’ve ever seen. And the fragrance is scrumptious.” The flower pot swelled with pride. “I
am beautiful. Everyone says I am.” Karen decided it was time to re-pot her
plants, to give their roots room to grow, she explained to her little
helper. The child took the plain clay pot and started toward the trash pile.
“Do you want me to throw this old thing away, Mama? It’s ugly.” "Who does she think she is calling me ugly? Why everyone says I’m
beautiful. I’ve heard this kid say so too! Why if he wasn’t half blind,
he could see how beautiful I am.” No, put it over by the washtub and I’ll
clean it up and put another plant in it. The child obeyed. On the shelf by
the washtub filled with sparkling clean water, the pot leaned over to see
its reflection in the water. The pot was shocked. He blinked his eyes. Then
he blinked again. He wasn’t beautiful. He was just a plain clay pot, just
like the child had said. But everyone had said, “Oh, how pretty. What were
they talking about? Then slowly but surely it dawned on the plain clay pot,
that it wasn’t him everyone was talking about, it was the beautiful flower
inside. You may be dripping with talents and abilities, but you are still a clay pot or earthen vessel. Jesus wants to fill you. His presence and glory in your life makes you beautiful! 4 Big Pigs Do you like to involve the class? Are
you looking for a fresh way to explain the salvation message to
mixed ages? Try 4 Big Pigs.
This fun story can be told by the teacher or one of the older class members while four children put on pig noses
and act out their part. The story goes, Mama pig tells everyone it
is time to build their own houses. Eleanor wants a beautiful
house, Smart Bart wants a smart energy efficient house, Andrew
wants a church house and Bones builds a house of stones. The wolf
comes and you know what happens. The allegory is you can’t be
saved being pretty, smart or going to church. The Rock Jesus is
the only way to be saved.
Want to have some fun! Then try these great quality masks for a real show stopper. These masks are awesome! Audiences of all ages love them. When
You Are Hurting I
recently spoke at a large Sunday School conference where I was sharing my
favorite lecture “Make the Bible Come Alive.” I explained how precious
the Bible has been to me in times of trouble. I explained to those in
attendance, "As I look over the crowd everyone looks like they
have it all together. You “look” like you don’t have a problem
in the world, but I’ve been around long enough that I know there are
people in this room that have problems. There are people in this room that
need God’s grace and help in situations you are facing.“ When
the workshop was over a woman stopped me. Her adult daughter was
standing nearby. They were both beautiful. They were both dressed like fashion models.
The lady pointed to herself and the daughter and said, “We are the people
you were talking about. We are facing a big problem.” I’m
so glad we serve a big God to help us face big problems. I’m so glad that
the Bible holds real answers. The fact is we all face big problems. If
you’re a parent, the challenge of raising Godly children can be
overwhelming. If they are teenagers, the choices before them keeps we
parents on our faces praying that they will choose the right mates and the
right careers. Life is full of concerns. It is filled with big problems and
little problems. When you face those big problems, don’t run away from
God. Don’t pout like a preschooler. Run to Jesus. Run to His Word. Tell
Him you’re hurting. Tell Him you can’t fix your problems. When you
humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, you will see results. God is
your heavenly father. He cares about you, not just your ministry. He wants
to build character and Godly trust in your heart. God is able to meet your
needs. Tommy
Barnett tells a story about a poor, little boy in a store. The owner of the
store tells the boy, “Reach your hand in that jar and get you out a hand
full of candy.” But the little boy shakes his head. The man insists,
“Now, come on son, reach in there and get you a hand The
little boy leaves the store beaming. Outside the mother questions him,
“Why wouldn’t you reach in the jar and get that candy?” As
he filled his pockets he looked at her with a wry grin, “His hand is
bigger than mine.” God’s
hand is bigger than yours. He is not a stingy God. He wants to meet your
needs so out of the overflow other people’s needs will be met.
2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. If
God is able and He definitely is ABLE, then why are we lacking finances,
volunteers or any of the other
things we could include under “all”? Could it be we have not asked and
believed Him for the answer to our problems. Could it be we don’t really
believe God means what He says. Well, He does. So take your needs to God.
Believe Him for the answer and stand fast until it comes. Product #TC Do your kids know the Ten Commandments? Is knowing the Ten Commandments enough? When the government took the Ten Commandments off the walls of the courthouses and schools did we take them out of the churches too? 4th & 5th graders were surveyed in numerous churches to discover 80% of them do not know the Ten Commandments. 80% is alarming! Does modern society really need old fashioned laws like the Ten Commandments? A public school teacher caught several students cheating on a Math test. She was extremely upset and began to reprimand the students when one student raised his hand. "What's the big deal?" he asked. I repeat the question to you? "What's the big deal?" Are values really important? Is the erosion of our society enough for us to get on our knees to call on Heaven to help us impact this generation? Is the erosion of values enough to draw us back to teaching foundational truths like the Ten Commandments? We are passionate about helping parents and children's ministry leaders impact children's lives. We want to see children experience a life changing, behavior changing relationship with Jesus Christ. It is vital that as Christian educators we go beyond rote knowledge to practical life application. We want to help you entertain, train and explain Bible truths in such a way your children can put them on like a pair of good shoes and walk out the principals in their everyday life. We do that through inspirational teacher training resources and solid, biblical curriculum like God's Lawz for Kidz. This 13-week adventure begins by establishing the commandments are not suggestions, but laws. The next two lessons come from the New Testament where Jesus establishes that the greatest commandment is love and second one is like it. All the other commandments hang on these laws of love. The unit uses interesting Bible & real-life stories to illustrate each commandment. These stories portray personalities from American history, lawmakers and landmarks from Washington D.C. where America's laws are made. The object lessons involve natural laws of science, set in motion by God that governs this Universe. Truths are then re-emphasized with skits either using live actors or two toucan birds. Cant, who thinks he "can't" keep the commandments and Can, who knows he can. Each lesson has a simple easy to follow format:
Use this curriculum for family devotions, children's church, Sunday School, midweek services, and outreach programs.
HOLY MACKEREL Holy
Living Reggie & Leader: Props: A plastic or paper fish with black holes
colored on them. Leader: (Reggie should enter without
the leader seeing him.) Wow! I smell something that smells bad. (When she
looks on one side Reggie moves behind her and to the other side.) What is
that smell? Reggie: (He points to the fish and
shrugs his shoulders to suggest "Is this what she's smelling?) Leader: (Look where they direct you, but Reggie has innocently moved to the other side not to avoid you, but to find you.) Wow! That smell is even louder now. I can't imagine what it could be. Reggie: (Reggie holds the fish behind
the leader's head and points to the leader.) Leader: (Look to the other side, but
Reggie has moved again.) It smells fishy. It must be my imagination; you
know, all this talk about fish. I'm sure that must be it, but this smell is
awful. Reggie: (Reggie is delighted he has
fooled you so many times. He should pinch his nose and point at the fish,
then pinch his nose and point at the leader.)
Leader: (Look in time to catch Reggie
in the act.) (Surprised.) Reggie! What are you doing?
Reggie: I've been . . . I've been . .
. uhh . . . fishing. Yea! See, I caught a holy mackerel!
Leader: Please get rid of it. It
stinks.
Reggie: Nooooo! I can't do dat.
Leader: Why not? It stinks real bad.
Reggie: Christians are supposed to be
holy. Right?
Leader: Absolutely, what does that
have to do with a fish. Reggie: Dis is a holy mackerel. It
helps me to be holy. Leader: Reggie, a fish with holes in
it will not make you holy. Only God can do that. It requires faith in Jesus
and a commitment to walk in obedience to God's Word to be holy. Reggie: A fish won't do? Leader: Not hardly. Reggie: Phew! (Throws fish behind
him.) I'm getting rid of dis stinking ding den. Bye!
Leader: Bye, Reggie!
