Things Every Clown
Ministry Should Consider
A clown ministry is an incredible asset to any
church or puppet team. People of all ages love clowns. Clowns are great
ice breakers and attention getters. They add fun color and excitement to
even the most ordinary event. Banks, corporations and business realize
this and use them to draw a crowd at grand opening or for advertising
events. Churches understand that the kind of energy and fun that is
created by clowns is a real drawing card for children and young
families. That's why we have clown ministries. But with materials from
clowning greats like Randy Christensen we can go beyond only
entertaining to impact our audiences.
1. Every Clown Ministry should
receive good training.
I love the "can do"
attitude of people in so many churches. They see other people doing a
clown ministry and they determine in their hearts, "I can do
that." That is how we grow and enlarge our abilities and influence.
But often assume because it looks easy, that it is easy and they just start
doing it... or at least they do...sort of do...that is. Maybe you know the kind of
team I'm thinking about. Their costumes are sloppy and their makeup is
scary and the only people that find them funny are the other team
members and committed family members.
Those kind of clowns are a
disgrace to clowning and ministry.. While you don't have to spend a
fortune, you need to find out the basic skills of
clowning. A video is always a great place to start. With a video you can
go back to the basics on a regular basis so you stayed focused on the
essentials of clowning. It is a great way to train new members as they
join instead of waiting to train several at a conference when it comes
to town.
2. Every clown ministry should
look sharp.
A clown shouldn't look like
a contestant at a tacky party. Look professional. You make-up should not
look ghoulish, but neat and attractive. Get ideas from professionals
without copying.
3. Every clown ministry should
practice, practice and then practice some more!
Practice. Practice. Practice.
Never stop growing. Video your shows. Watch them for evaluating purposes
with the same zeal of a football coach watching the last game. Evaluate
honestly. Learn,
Look and Listen. Watch your audience. Repeat what works. Eliminate
things that don't work.
4. Every clown ministry should
keep the humor in good taste. Foul language and vulgarity might be
part of culture, but it should never be part of our routine. Be careful
that the laughs don't come at the audience's expense.
5. Every clown ministry should
never lose sight of your goal. If you are a really good clown and
market yourself or your team really well there will be a demand for your
services. In our hurry to juggle all the demands of life it is easy to
lose focus on what is really important. Never forget your first goal is
to serve Christ with the talents and tools you have in your hand.
