I would like to share with you some scriptures and some prayers I pray based on Scripture. I began putting together verses to pray over my chldren when they were very young. I’ve added to that list over the years. Many of these prayers are based on Scripture but not word for word scripture, more about just my prayer based on that verse. Because I have taught on this so much, I will not take the space or you time to repeat it, but if you would like more information you can click on the links at the bottom of this page.

One of my Favorites to Pray

Father, I thank you for my children. They are precious gifts. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give ______ the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that they will know You better. I pray that the eyes of their heart may be enlightened so that they may know the hope to which he has called them, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is like the working of his mighty strength. which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. I pray that they will live up to your calling. I pray that they will fulfill the purpose that you placed them on this earth to fill. Ephesians 1:16-19 NIV

I pray that they will know Your love that surpasses knowledge--that they may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Father I recognize that You are able to do immeasurably more than all we can ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! 91:15 With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation. (Based on Psalms 91:1-15)

Pursue God

Father, I pray that my children will be followers of God as dear children. I pray that they will not be afraid of what their peers say or do to them. I pray that they will seek to please you in all they do, instead of trying to please people. I pray that they will desire to be like Jesus and not the world. Bless your children with your words.

Say to them: 24 " ' "The LORD bless you and keep you; 25 the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; 26 the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace." ' 27 "So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them." Numbers 6:22-27

How to use these Scriptures:

Select specific verses to pray according to need.
Select specific verses to pray according desired results.
Ask God to help you pray according to His will and what He sees.
Select a verse or several verses that seem to jump out at you.
Pray all the verses.

Why should you pray Scriptures?

My mind wanders when I pray. All kinds of things come to mind when I start praying. I want to stay focused and spend time with my dear friend. Scripture helps me focus on the answer beyond the problem.

The Bible is God's will. I want to pray in faith. Not just whine about my problems. 1 John 5:14 NLT "And we can be confident that he will listen to us whenever we ask him for anything in line with his will."?The scriptures are His will, so when I pray the scriptures I am praying according to His will. My faith is stronger when my prayer is based on scripture.

When Jesus was teaching the disciples to pray, He said Matthew 6:9 NLT "Pray like this" and then continued with the Lord's Prayer. I pray Paul's prayers from Ephesians 1 and Ephesians 3. The priestly blessing from Numbers 6:22-27. There are numerous prayers that can be used as a guide or prayer model.

In Matthew 6 Jesus gave an example, not words to parrot. I use His examples from scripture and pray them. Not just other people's prayers, but things that I want to see changed in my life. For example in Ephesians 5:2 Paul says follow God's example in everything you do, so I pray “Father, help me follow your example in everything I do.”

This is a short illustration that you might want to add to your service on Sunday to celebrate love.

Deut 10:12 "And now, order Israel, store what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul,

You know about requirements. Maybe your teacher explained the requirements or what you absolutely had to do to make a passing grade at the beginning of the school year. Or, perhaps your soccer coach explained that you are required to attend practice at least once a week to play on the team. Or, you mom requires you to clean your plate if you are going to get to eat dessert. In every area of life there are basic requirements. God has some requirements; some basics necessities; things you must do.

Moses taught them to the Jewish people while they were still in the wilderness. But this basic requirement is actually rooted in the Ten Commandments. And, let me point out here, this wasn't Moses suggestion, it was God's absolute requirement.

1. Fear the Lord.
2. Obey the Lord
3. Love the Lord.
4. Serve the Lord.

Don't panic when you notice in that verse "fear the Lord." God is not talking about the fear that grips you and makes you run hide or cower so you don't get hit. This is a reverential fear that causes you to recognize the authority God has over your life. It cause you to respect, reverse directions and obey Him because He is God. This is a very important attitude to have because as much as God loves you, He is also King of Kings and you will stand before Him and give account of your actions.

I want to move to requirement 3, Love the Lord. We talk about love a lot. We love football. By the way, did your team win the Super Bowl? That's another subject for another day. We love ice cream or cartoons. But that's not the way God wants us to love. That a "change with your mood" kind of love. Sometimes you do and sometimes you don't love. God wants you to love Him with a deeper affection. A love that goes deeper than a mood or whim, all the way to the kind that changes your actions and attitudes. He said in John 14:15 NKJV "If you love Me, keep My commandments." When we love God deeply it affects everything we do and say. It affects who we select for our closest friends, what we do with our time and how we spend our money. What or who we love changes who we are and the other things we love.

Do you love God? Do you really love God? Do you really, really love God? Is it reflected in your choices, your attitudes, in your life? If you really love Him it will show.

Bow your head with me and let's pray. (Your prayer should be from your heart, mine sounds something like this.) Father, your word tells me that I must love you not just when I come to church, but with a deep love that causes me to obey, serve and follow you every day. Forgive me for the times when I have loved my way better than your way. Help me to love you more. Help me to live out that love by spending time with you and serving you daily.

Have you shopped for backpacks lately?

Have you seen all the features, store all the options available on a lowly backpack? They come with rollers, pilule but many schools don't allow them. They come with drink holders, recipe and pockets, and compartments and a little hamster that does their homework for them. OK, so maybe you haven't found the hamster model, but I'm sure you've seen the dazzling and confusing options available. We buy them at the beginning of the school year, or we use them for back packing and hiking. We stuff computers in them, but few people would describe them as life saving! Few except Meesh Hytner's parents. They will forever be thankful that they gave their daughter a very special backpack for a Christmas gift. Let me explain.

Meesch is an avid snowboarder. On January 25th she was snowboarding in the back country near Montezuma, Colorado when an avalanche sent snow thundering down her path. It could have been fatal. Often, people are buried under the snow and perish. But Meesch was wearing her backpack. Thinking clearly she deployed her BCA Float 30 avalanche airbag inside that special backpack, which kept her from being buried alive. Her parents had wisely given their child what was needed to face the inherent dangers of snowboarding. That backpack saved her life.

No child should ever leave home without a backpack. I'm not referring to the Oakley Kitchen Sink Backpack or even the High Sierra Fat Boy Backpack. (Can you believe those crazy names for backpacks?) I'm not even referring to the BCA Float 30 avalanche backpack. But there is one backpack that only you as a parent can give them. I don't have a clever name for it, so I'll let you select a name. But I can tell you three things that you need to pack inside their emotional backpack that they will carry with them their entire lives, or be without their entire lives.

1. Unconditional love. Tell them you love them. Show them you love them in ways that communicate love to that child. Touch them. Listen to them.
2. Model your faith. Let them see your pray. Make church attendance a priority. Read the Bible with them. Play Christian music. Be an example of a believer in word, conversation, love and truth. Pray strategically.
3. Deliberately plant and nurture the seed of God's Word in their hearts. Teach them the Scriptures; rehearse the principles of the Scriptures so they understand them. Teach strategically. Plug them into groups that will build their faith. Their personal faith in God and a foundation of biblical values will keep them and guide them through life.

Hopefully your church family and ministry staff will invest and reinforce what you are doing at home, but they will never be able to give them what you can. It's your job to invest in your child and no one, NO ONE, can do that for you. Only you can give your child the coolest backpack ever! And yes, it is expensive. Yes, it costs you time. It costs you commitment and creativity. Still, don't let your child face the challenges of life without the coolest backpack ever!

I realize that most people that stop by this blog are here to gain information or encouragement that will help them be more effective in children's ministry! I sincerely appreciate that you would give me the opportunity to share with you. But from time to time I want to help you build children by building and encouraging their parents to fulfill their role as Christian parents. This blog is written with that purpose in mind. Would you do them a favor and me as well, would you send this blog link to every parent in your church or repost this blog link in your blog or your next newsletter? Thank you again for the opportunity to share my heart with you! Children's Ministry folks are absolutely the greatest people in the world!

I Love Labels

Labels identify the contents of a can, look i.e. tomatoes, website corn or peaches. Labels also communicate a status symbol and the accompanying price value of a item such as a Coach or Gucci product. Labels warn us, prescription entice us and inform us. Label give us caloric count and nutritional values. Labels can mislead us, but still labels influence what we purchase and how much we are willing to spend to own that particular brand.

Labels identify the manufacturer.

Labels
I typically never get on a brand band-wagon. I prefer to shop for values that leave more money in my pocket-book or fit my personal taste, rather than purchasing a brand that has produced a lot of advertising hype. But I can think of one brand that I absolutely love. I could and have spent hours rambling through their store. Did I mention, they only carry their brand. I always wait for a great sale or clearance to purchase anything. But I trust their quality. I love their designs and have enjoyed using their products. Maybe you have a favorite brand of shirts, tennis rackets or vehicles that you consistently shop for. It's probably labeled in the neck, across the bumper or maybe in the handle, but one thing is for sure...you know it by name and it's recognizable by its features, quality or beauty.

Every believer should wear a label.

Not a bumper sticker or a big "Jesus" necklace around your neck,
but a label. A label that identifies you as a Christ follower, as a believer...as a person that is like Christ. It's not a label in your shirt or across your forehead, but it is as identifiable as the infamous golden arches....that label is love. Jesus said it in John 15:35 "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

Love identifies us.

It labels us. It marks our life, because when we love, we are like God. God is love. He doesn't have love. He is love. It is important to realize that the love I am referring to here is not the twisted self-seeking love displayed in the movies. Real love is pure, self-less and enduring. It finds its source in a spring beyond human capacity. A spring hidden in the heart of God, released and flowing through human containers. Love brings life. Love causes talents to bloom and births hope. The power of love is shocking, yet breath-taking to glimpse.

From time to time we see it in action, feel its touch or experience its power, but those moments are less frequent than they should be. Why? I'd like to ask you that question? Why don't we see the God kind of love displayed in more believer's lives? But we can't answer that question for anyone except ourselves. Why don't I or why don't you display or extend the God kind of love more frequently? Maybe it's because we are not rooted in God's love, the spring head of all love. Perhaps we don't spend enough time in His presence for that love to permeate our very being. Or maybe we have modeled our love after the love displayed by our culture? Or maybe you do? I hope so...it's my greatest desire to experience His love, so I can be a container and a conduit for it to flow into and through so that those around me will know I belong to Him. When we experience that love and give that love, they'll know what God looks like, because they'll see Him reflected in us!

So, I have to admit,  I'm labeled and I'm loving it!
Labels identify the contents of a can, visit i.e. tomatoes, malady corn or peaches. Labels also communicate a status symbol and the accompanying price value of a item such as a Coach or Gucci product. Labels warn us, entice us and inform us. Label give us caloric count and nutritional values. Labels can mislead us, but still labels influence what we purchase and how much we are willing to spend to own that particular brand.
Labels
Labels identify the manufacturer.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I have drawn an invisible line in the car and threatened my kids to cross it.

Their repeated, approved "Mom, unhealthy he/she touched me, capsule " seemed endless. Then the other child would reply, "She/he touched me first," The squabbling had to end. Jason you sit on your side and Kimberly you sit on your side. Because they finally realized I meant business, the argument would end.

I never could understand why they would argue over such a petty thing as being touched. What's the big deal? But for whatever reason it was a big deal to them as we rode down the highway toward our destination.

Church Squabbles

And I have to admit that some of the church squabbles that I've observed have been equally mystifying.

A church mama.

I just wish there was a mama sitting on the front row that could do what I managed to do on our road trips.

A mama or a pastor or some Godly saint that would remind all the participants that the bickering and the arguing had to stop! I don't think that would work because adults don't want to be told anything, especially that they are wrong.

Church Fights

I realize there are all kinds of reasons for church fights, most of which don't amount to much more than the childish, "She touched me," that my kids used against each other.

Some are rooted in jealousy, while others are rooted in miscommunication or misunderstanding.

Sometimes, I have played referee over things that were minor conflicts that had gotten blown totally out of proportion. Sometimes, I just wanted to say, would you two just hush and get along.

Or better yet, "Stop being so petty!" I've never had the courage to say it and on the other hand that attitude isn't very loving any way. But, because I love people, it is so hard to stand by and see them be wounded or wound others over petty issues. It is heartbreaking to realize their pettiness and bickering was taking a real toll on both themselves and often the entire church.

Adults should never resemble immature kids bickering in the back seat of the car over absolutely nothing important. A friend told me recently, "Too often adults act like children that don't know how to play together."

And she is right. We need to grow up emotionally and learn how to get along with each other. We need to forgive, instead of feeding our grudges. We need to think the best and believe the best, instead of jumping to conclusions. How can we win the world for Christ if we're too disgruntled to speak to the lady that sits three rows behind us?

Love is kind.

Love forgives.

Love does not keep a list of everything Sis. Doomaflochey has ever done wrong or all the mistakes of Bro. Grouchy sitting at the end of pew three.

Love forgives before they ask for it. Love forgives even if they don't ask for it.

Love sees the need in a brother or sister in Christ and prays for God to help them win over that weakness. Oh I know, most of the time we think the other fellow is the one that needs the love stuff. And that's true, that's why God wants us to give it to them.

1 Corinthians 13:4 NLT "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud 5 or rude. It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance."
