Fingerprint Snowman Ornament

While this deviates from my normal blog posts, website like this it is a great craft for parents or grandparents. The devotions can be adapted for a class as well. I am always looking for fun ways that give me an opportunity to share God's Word with my grands.

I was so excited to have the afternoon to do this craft with my youngest grandchildren.

I covered the table with paper and put a bowl of warm water for clean up on the table. I told them exactly what we were going to do. Then I let them each practice grasping the ball ornament and releasing it.

God Loved the Whole Worldfingerprint-snowman3

Kayden isn't even two yet, sales so I knew my long devotion would never be appropriate for him. So we just sang the following words to the tune of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”

God loved the whole world and sent His Son.

God loved the whole world and sent His Son.

God loved the whole world and sent His Son.

He came to save the world from their sins!

Let the Fun Beginfingerprint-snowman14

Wearing old clothes and one of my old T-shirts cinched up in the back with a clothes pin, (I have earned the bad grandma award for getting paint on kid's clothes before. It wasn't gonna happen today.) we began the craft. Keira asked to paint her hand. I dipped the foam brush into paint and handed her the paint brush.

Then I put the ornament in her hand and let her squeeze it gently. You don’t have any Supermen at your house that will crush the ornaments do you? Well, I was afraid I did, so I purchased plastic ornaments at the Dollar Store. I got 7 ornaments for a dollar. They look pretty good too.

When she opened their hand, I pulled the ornament straight up and hung it to dry. You can turn the ornament upside down in a small mouthed jar or egg carton to dry. I pushed back my curtain, added the string and hung them on my curtain rod to dry. While the handprint is drying you can share this devotion. Remember to use good story telling skills and adapt to their age and attention span.

Fingerprint Snowman Ornament Devotion

Look, you just left your handprint on that ornament. Now its time to let the handprint dry. We'll turn your fingerprints into snowmen when they're dry.

Are you having fun? Do you like to make things?

You are not the only one that loves to make beautiful things. God does too. Your ornament reminds me of something really awesome that God made- the Earth.

One of the cool things about what God did is He made it all from nothing. I had to gather the materials for our craft project, but not God.

Beginning with the light…God created everything just by speaking it into existence. That’s pretty awesome. God spoke…”Let there be…” and it was created. Then God looked at what He had made and said, “That is good!” God liked what he had made. I hope when you finish your craft you’ll say “That is good!”

God created everything that way, until He got to the 6th day. On the 6th day, God got down in the dirt and got His hands really dirty. Do you like to get your hands dirty?

Did you like the way that paint felt on your hand? (I think God was using wet mud so it must have felt like that paint on your hand.) Do you think God used grey dirt or maybe it was brown or red? I don’t know.

He shaped and formed a man that was like God. That man had God’s fingerprints all over him. Then God breathed into man and gave him life. When God finished making man He said, “This is very good.” I think God had a big smile on his face when He finished making man, cause God loved the man He made.

Later God made a woman, so Adam wouldn't be alone. And that was the first family.

But one day, something really terrible happened. They disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit. You may think, that’s no big deal. What’s so terrible about eating fruit from a tree? But it was a big deal. God told them not to eat it, disobeying God is sin. And because of that sin they had to leave the garden. They were separated from God.

In Genesis 3:15 God made them a promise, kinda wrapped in a mystery, to send Jesus into the world to pay the penalty for the sin that separates us from God.

Then in John 3:16 we see God’s fingerprint on the world in an amazing way when he fulfilled His promise. I know you know the verse, but let’s say it very slowly so we taste the words as we say them… For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. NIV

And that’s why we celebrate Christmas because God gave His best gift, His most precious gift -His Son, Jesus, so that you can have new life through Him. What an amazing gift Jesus is.

After Christmas we’ll put away the tree. We’ll throw away the wrapping paper, but long after Christmas is over we can enjoy God’s great gift. We can enjoy Jesus all year long, every year for the rest of our lives. His gift never tears up, never wears out, never gets old.

Kayden was ready for a nap. He got his blankie to make sure I knew what time it was.

He wasn't interested in putting faces on the ornaments, but Keira was. I should have used more paint on her hand or maybe it got too dry before I got the ornament in her hand? The bodies were skinny, but maybe her fingers are skinny?

Don't forget the snowflakes. That was her favorite part…that and the carrot noses. I helped her, but she's a better artist than I am, so that leaves this craft projects looking like…well…sorta like a 4 year old made it.

Second Devotion Idea
Happy Family

Or wait until the snowmen are finished and share this devotion.
Look at what you just made! You made a happy snowman family! Look at those smiles on those faces. You made those smiles too!

fingerprint-snowman6But there are some families this time of year that don’t have happy smiles.

In some families there is sickness that stole their smile.

In some families a family member is missing, so they don’t feel much like smiling.

Some families don’t have money for gifts and they’ve lost their smile too.

While we can’t paint smiles on people’s faces, there are things we can do to help them give them a smile.

One thing that we can do is to pray for sad families. Let's pray for sad families right now.

If they are older watch this Youtube video together.

Let’s listen to this song together. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4bB7BUxBbY

Stop the song just before you get to “God put a million million doors in the world for His love to walk through one of those doors is you.” With Every Act Of Love. (C) 2013 Centricity Music and be sure they are still listening.

After Christmas Devotion Idea

Leave Your Handprint on Heaven

When you take down the tree invite them to come help you. Wrap a small gift and put on the tree for each child? When they take down their hand ornament, tell them the story of Elijah and how when he prayed, God sent a cloud about the size of a man's hand. We leave our handprint on heaven when we pray. No matter how old or how young we are we can leave our handprint on heaven.

1 Kings 18:42-46 Elijah touches heaven.
